[ID: a mostly black and white portrait that is kind of sketchy featuring an Asian woman sitting in a power wheelchair in the center of the image. She is looking straight ahead. She has a trach on her neck and is holding the hose gently in her hand. The only color is her bright red lipstick. Superimposed over her is a giant image of a roaring tiger, showing her ferocity.]

Memorial Portrait of Alice

November 15, 2025

Alice Wong was someone I met back in 2018 when she hired me to do a fun portrait of her surrounded by sweet treats. But then when I got the opportunity to do the Crip Camp Fellowship and was getting paired off with a mentor I had my fingers crossed that I would get paired of with Alice. I knew that she was so cool and someone I really looked up to and whose opinion really mattered to me.

When I worked with her during the Fellowship, it went great. She was so insightful for my project, Portraits for Disabled Kids. We stayed in contact all these years afterward. I could reach out to her whenever. I’ve drawn her so many times. My favorite is the “Dreamlike” portrait where she is surrounded by icecream.

I’ve loved Alice. She was my mentor and my friend. I just spoke with her a week ago, showing her that her portrait was hanging in the gallery at Whitman Collage. She was so proud. I’m so glad she got to see that before she passed. I am more devastated than I can put into words. I can’t believe she’s gone.
